2023 Arts In Bloom

The Arts in Bloom exhibit is always a hightlight of the HCA's year! This year is no exception. Over 80 artists submitted artwork for consideration from 35 towns and 5 states. We received a wonderful variety of works from Experimental to Classical Realism and everything in between.

Out of 200 pieces, Juror Kaveh Mojtabai selected 44 for display in this year's exhibition. Six pieces were identified for an award and will be honored with fresh flower arrangements designed the Hopkinton Garden Club members that will be on display May 12th - May 15th.

The HCA Art In Bloom 2023 Exhibition will be available for viewing at the HCA's Lotvin Family gallery April 24 - June 2, 2023 as well as online here.
Opening Reception: May 12 at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts from 6 to 7:00pm.

The HCA gallery hours for public viewing: Monday - Fridays 9 am - 7 pm and Saturdays 9 am - 2 pm. What inspired you to make this work?: I am inspired by the strength of individuals who fight daily for their survival, many of whom learn to thrive through their insistence, resistance, and courage. As I worked with a lace-flowered cloth and my rhythmic, energetic brushstrokes, I decided to add the tacks as a way to create a source of light rising up from the darkness.

$2,000.00

Dimensions: 40 x 40 x 2
Medium: oils on canvas
Year created: 2023
What inspired you to make this work?: Brief description: The venerability of We Look at the Same Sun is an expression synonymous with Mother Earth. The Same Sun lends to our departure with the stations of life searching for new noise and passion and empowering and encouraging change. In this conception, the 'Sun' is not a source of material for production but the beginning and end of all life and culture. We Look at the Same Sun only merits this moment along that grey-draped zig-zag shoreline; we sit or stand in resolute silence as artists like Arts in Bloom. We 'universal communicators' are documenting, creating, and possibly repeating chapters of human history, being nowhere and everywhere. The sun's rays are my reality; each stroke is a note from my life. These rich colors are a ray of unspoken laughter and a playful hue between the sun and me. With each breath, everything else is merely shadows and scenery. Our sight and minds are drugged, so we let you in the sun. Soft and gentle like 'Arts in Bloom' but deeper and heavier than our daze can handle - so vast, you leave us confident, faithful, and authentic that we are the change to recharge life.
Pomelo
Pomelo
Christine Regan Davi
$375.00

Dimensions: 24 x 30 x 1.5
Medium: Photography, archival pigment print on 100% cotton rag fine art paper
Year created: 2022
What inspired you to make this work?: Colors appearing in nature—the vibrant skin of a fruit or vegetable—have inspired me to explore the use of color in my works more deeply. For this piece—the first in what has become a still life series—I chose a simple Pomelo for its striking yellow skin and soft triangular shape. The box in which it sits is hand-painted, the colors carefully mixed to offset the Pomelo itself. I’m delighted by the interplay of light, space and color that gives the piece an illusion of depth and alters our senses, if only for a brief moment.

What inspired you to make this work?: Colors appearing in nature—the vibrant skin of a fruit or vegetable—have inspired me to explore the use of color in my works more deeply. For this still life series, I chose heirloom varieties of eggplant and tomato seeds and marveled each day at how they thrived in my raised bed garden. When ready for harvesting, I placed each organic object in a hand-constructed and hand-painted box. I’m delighted by the interplay of light, space and color that gives these pieces an illusion of depth and alters our senses, if only for a brief moment.
